Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a British overseas territory in the south Iberian Peninsula that overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar. It's an important base for the Royal Navy and the British Armed Forces. Although it's a self-governing territory, Spain, to the north, does not recognize its autonomy and it remains on the list of non-self-governing territories. In size, Gibraltar is 2.6 square miles and the current population is estimated to be 29,286. The Gross Domestic Product is about $1066 million, with a per capita of $38.200. The major ethnic groups are Gibraltarian, British Moroccan, and Indian. Gibraltarian is a mix of Genoese, Maltese, Portuguese, and Andalusian people. The government is a British Overseas Territory, consequently the of Head of State is Queen Elizabeth II. The Governor is Sir Adrian Johns and the Prime Minister is Peter Caruana. It's capital and the largest city is Westside. The official languages is English, but Spanish is often spoken, and the vernacular, Llanito. Gibraltar was captured by Spain on August 4, 1704, but ceded to Britain in the Treaty of Ultrecht on April 11, 1713. However, Spain still asserts a claim to Gibraltar and wants its return. The majority of the Maltese population neither want to be returned to Spain nor for Spain to share sovereignty with Britain.

The British navy provided most of the economic income, but Gibraltar has become a service-based economy, with tourism and financial services being the main sources of income. Banking is a major part of the business, with international and British banks. Many famous British retailers have operations here, like Marks & Spencer, Topshop, Mothercare, and Miss Selfridge, as well as international retailers like Mango, Sunglass Hut, and Tommy Hilfiger.
