Ghana, a country in West Africa, was once part of the Ghana Empire and the name means "Warrior King." The Ivory Coast is to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, Togo to the east, and the Gulf of Guinea to the west. In size, Ghana is 92,098 square miles and its population is estimated to be 23,837,000. The Gross Domestic Product is about $36.3 billion, with a per capita of $1,157. Officially known as the Republic of Ghana, the government is a constitutional democracy, with John Atta Mills as President, John Dramani Mahama as Vice President, Joyce Bamford-Addo as Speaker of Parliament, and Gerogina Thodora Wood as Chief Justice. It's capital and the largest city is Accra and the official language is English. Although, Ghana is richer than its neighbors, with many natural resources like gold, diamond, bauxite, and manganese, the country still requires international assistance and investments from the Ghanaian diaspora. It's estimated that 28% of the population live on less than a dollar a day. Ghana declared its independence from the British on March 6, 1957, and became a republic on July 1, 1960.
