Irish

Irish, a member of the Indo-European language family, is spoken by a small minority of the people in Ireland. It’s estimated that between 10,000 to 80,000 out of 4.4 million people in Ireland actually speak the language. Nevertheless, Irish enjoys constitutional rights as the official language of the Republic of Ireland. In addition, it’s recognized as an official language of the European Union. Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland, it’s recognized as an official minority language. Irish as a language plays a symbolic role in establishing the sovereignty of the Irish state and it’s mainly used in personal relationships, community interactions and some national media. Often considered a second language in schools, where it’s compulsory, students show reasonable fluency.

However, 42 percent of the Irish population regard themselves as competent but not fluent. Monolinguistic Irish speakers are restricted to elderly people in isolated regions of Ireland. Overall, then, one in three people in Ireland can understand Irish. Outside Ireland, it’s estimated that 95,000 people speak Irish in the United Kingdom and 18,000 people speak Irish in the United States. In the world, as a whole, Irish is spoken fluently by 335,000 speakers, competently by 538,283 speakers, and understood by 1,860,000 speakers.
