Madagascar, an island off the coast of Africa, has little in common with the evolution of African flora and fauna. Separated from the continent of Africa by hundreds of miles and millions of years of evolution, this island has sprouted the weirdest plants and animals on earth. The plants are unusual, from the twisted “octopus” trees to the inverse shaped trees called baobabs to the 60 variations of the ruthless carnivorous Ranomafana plant. And the animals, too, are different. Lemurs, chameleons, and elephant birds, for example. The Lemurs display 70 distinct variations, the chameleons are atypically gigantic or tiny, and the elephant birds, now, alas extinct, were reckoned to be the largest bird to have ever existed. Finally, the indigenous people are unique as well, sharing more in common with their Asian relatives than their African neighbors. For example, although their ancestors sailed the Indian Ocean trade routes at the time of Jesus Christ, they still grow rice on terraced paddies and speak a language similar to root words found in Southeast Asia. The polite, friendly Madagascans love showing visitors their many pirate shipwrecks clustering like broken dreams on the edges of their island.
