TV Channel Lineup by Language : Papiamentu

Papiamento, the official language of both Aruba and Netherlands Antilles is a Creole language that is spoken by nearly 330,000 people worldwide. Like all other Creole languages, Papiamento originated from a mixture of several different languages. While Papiamento finds its roots in Portuguese with African, Arawak and English influences, the true history of the language remains a mystery. The most common theory for the development of the Papiamento language, however, is that the language developed between African slaves and Portuguese traders between the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, along with being the official language of Aruba and the Netherland Antilles, Papiamento is also widely spoken on two Dutch colony islands, Sint Eustatius and Saba as well as the island of St. Martin. Most speakers of Papiamento also speak other languages. Some of the more common second languages include Spanish, English and Dutch. There are two common dialects for Papiamento, as well. And while both Papiamento in Aruba and Papiamento in Curaco share the same root language, Aruban Papiamento is more closely related to Spanish than the Portuguese from which it is derived.
